General Description

Scope:

The policy applies to students living in main campus residence halls.

Policy Content

Main Campus & City Vista
Due to the extreme fire hazard, candles, halogen lamps, containers of flammable liquids, grills, incense, as well as other devices with open flames are prohibited in the residence halls.  Extension cords are not permitted, however surge protectors (14 gauge) may be used. Residents may not use an abundance of surge protectors, nor can they split outlets.

Smoke detectors may not be detached from the ceiling, deactivated, covered, or unplugged at any time. All doorways and exits must maintain a clear pathway at all times. Furniture and other items may not impede the use of doorways and exits. Residents and guests are required to evacuate the building when the fire alarm sounds and may re-enter the building only when University officials give clearance.

Each residence hall room/City Vista unit must meet a standard of livable cleanliness. Dirty dishes left out unwashed for an extended period of time, food/trash on the floor that may attract rodents or bugs, a foul room odor, etc. is unacceptable. Floors must have a clear path of walking to and from the bathroom, closet, front door, and balcony door at all times.

Any student who props open or tampers with a locked exterior residence hall door will be subject to a minimum fine of $200 and/or relocation to another residence hall or eviction.

Exception: City Vista residents are permitted to have candles in their unit. Candles may not be left lit if no residents are present. All other aforementioned general safety policies/prohibited items will be enforced.
