General Description

Purpose:

Because of the danger of fire, necessary restrictions must be placed on use of electrical appliances in rooms and extreme caution taken.

Scope:

This policy applies to students living in main campus residence halls. 

Policy Content

Main Campus Only
All electrical appliances with an exposed heating element are prohibited in all areas of main campus residence halls with the exception of designated kitchen areas. The only items exempt from this policy are irons, hair straighteners, hair curlers, hair dryers, but they must possess an automatic shut-off function and be unplugged when not in use. The only refrigerator and microwave units of any kind permitted in the residence halls are the University-provided Microfridge units. 

Food preparation appliances with exposed heating elements may be kept and used in public residence hall kitchens only.

Residential Life reserves the right to remove any appliance that is deemed to be a fire hazard or other safety concern.

Examples of appliances with exposed heating elements include, but are not limited to:
- Hot plate
- Space heater
- Toaster
- Toaster oven
- Traditional coffee pot (Keurig-style single-serve coffee makers are permitted)

Performance Evaluation

Consequences of Policy Violation:

Policy violations may be handled by Residential Life or referred to the Dean of Students' Office.
